It is every girl’s dream to walk down the aisle with her prince charming. Everything must be perfect – from the perfect wedding gown, unforgettable location and reception, guests to share your special day with, food to be served, even down to the wedding cake and giveaways. But we all know that times are now tough and it is not so smart to actually overspend on this day. Yes, it’s supposed to be your special moment, but that does not necessarily mean you have to empty your wallet.

There are so many of saving for your wedding. Here are some suggestions:

• PLAN AHEAD. There’s nothing like a warrior prepared for battle. Don’t even think about cramming or even tell yourself that “you still have a lot of time to do everything”. Before you know, it’s just a few weeks away. Know what you’re supposed to do – read some bridal magazines, search for wedding websites on the Internet and research on things that you should be taking care of. Cramming tends to force you to spend too much on something you shouldn’t really be paying so much for.

• HAVE A FIXED BUDGET. And work around that budget. You need to discipline yourself into spending only that amount of money. You can provide a little allowance for unexpected expenses but always remember that all the little expenses can blow up into a very huge amount. Most importantly, never go beyond the budget.

• DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK AROUND. Whether it’s for the gown, wedding cake, wedding venue, food to be served or wedding favors to be given out. Call up the service providers and ask for the best offer they could give. List them down and once you’re finished, choose the ones that fits within your budget (or something that’s even lower than your allotted amount) and gives you what you’re actually looking for. If you have relatives or friends, maybe you can ask them for recommendations and if you’re lucky enough, the ones they recommend may even give you discounts.

• BE ARTISTIC & CRAFTY. If you are into crafts, or if anyone in your family is artistic, why not create your own invitations, giveaways, decorations and table centerpieces? There are many suggestions and how-to’s in bridal magazines and wedding websites. Take advantage of it.

• LIMIT YOUR GUESTS. Remember, this is your day. Nobody should dictate who you should invite. Try to keep it within your inner circle – immediate family, close relatives and friends. You don’t really want this wedding to be a circus where you meet people for the first time and have no idea who is who and what’s their business.

• SAY NO TO PEAK SEASONS AND SAY YES TO WEEKDAYS. Aside from the fact that you have very stiff competition with the bookings, establishments tend to have higher rates during the peak season. This is also true for weekends, so why not try holding your wedding on a weekday.

• SHARE THE COST. Paying for the wardrobe of your wedding entourage? You don’t really have to. Talk to those who could afford to pay for their outfits and gently ask if they are willing to spend. Or offer to pay for half and let them pay for the other half. Chances are, since people in your entourage are close to you, they would understand.

• SERVE BUFFET FOOD. Buffets tend to be cheaper and more wallet-friendly. Ask your caterer what would be the best option. Aside from allowing your guests to freely get the food that they choose to eat, there would be less waiting staff required to serve.

These are only a few of the many different ways of cutting the wedding cost. Always keep in mind that this may be your special day, but you still have a lifetime to share with your future spouse. Be wise and prepare for that lifetime by saving, while enjoying this unforgettable event.

Congratulations in advance!
