Savings Tip #14 - Ask for Wedding Gift Certificates

To save money on catering, flowers, other wedding services, or your honeymoon, start asking for gift certificates!
Many companies offer gift certificates, for example I would like to take everyone out to dinner at the Venetian’s Grand Lux Cafe after our wedding (instead of catering). So, for Christmas and my birthday I will be asking for Grand Lux Cafe gift certificates (along with wish lists that I normally supply). Here’s another tip, if you have that one or two family members that always gives you cash at the holidays - decide that this year it will go to the wedding fund.
Your catering company may offer gift certificates. Your flower shop might too. How about your baker for your wedding cake? Quite possibly! Time to call and find out, ask how family members can purchase gift certificates. Be sure to ask about expiration dates and make sure that they don’t end until your wedding date or a month later (to be safe).
How about the honeymoon? I have several suggestions:
- Hotels - many hotels offer gift certificates. The Marriot actually has a wedding registry that allows for anything from a nights stay to a champagne add-on at dinner!
- Cruises - Cruises are great because they are all-inclusive (minus alcohol and excursions). But you do get a place to sleep, good food, entertainment and transportation. Living in Florida gives Tanner and I great access to cruise ports, but if you don’t live close, check for deals online at Southwest.com or use a website like Travelocity.com. When Tanner and I met on a Royal Caribbean cruise, I was living in CT and I paid $600 for the cruise (including the flight to FL from CT!). Royal Caribbean has gift certificates and so does Carnival. Check your preferred cruise line for gift certificates!
- All-Inclusive Resorts - That’s right, Sandals, Beaches, etc. Both resorts actually have complimentary wedding ceremonies. Sounds like a pretty good idea for a cheap ceremony, all you have to pay for is the honeymoon! Anyways, I know they have gift certificates because I have seen a couple’s wedding registry and it had them on there, but I can’t find them online right now, so I suggest calling them.
If you’re not sure who offers gift certificates, just ask!
