Make Your Own Soap Wedding Favors

I have a small hobby of soap making. I’m not a chemist lol so I do simple “melt and pour” soap making, which is as easy as it sounds. I melt a plain soap base in the microwave, mix in color and scent and then pour it into molds. It’s very fun and I enjoy doing it.

There are various types of molds you can use, here are some cool molds that I am considering as wedding favors:

- Bride and Groom mold
- Gift Box and Rings mold
- Wedding Cake mold

Here are the steps to making wedding favor soaps!

1) Buy a block of soap that is made for melt and pour soap making. I suggest using a white soap, because you can see details better in white soap. I typically use clear soap for soap that doesn’t contain a visual design. I like Goat’s Milk soap for white soap, but you can also try a simple Glycerin soap.

2) You will need colors, fragrances, a drinking glass or glass measuring cup, something to stir with (I use a metal fork), something to cut the soap block with (I use a metal knife), and a microwave! I highly suggest labeling your fragrances with a permanent marker, it will make them easier to find and you may forget what the fragrance names are if you don’t have them. When I made lotions once, the two scents were so similar I had a lot of trouble distinguishing them, so labeling them was essential.

3) Next, buy molds. Here is a mold that I currently own. It is a massage bar mold and I highly recommend it. Anyone who has been to the MGM Grand in Vegas and used their free soap knows how luxorious it can be. These might be a good option to give as a wedding favor because they are very enjoyable.

4) Next, comes the mixing and pouring. If your making a solid bar of soap, such as the massage bars, just take 3-4 chunks of soap (they are already scored, and you should roughly measure how many chunks it will take to fill your mold), melt in the microwave for about 40 seconds, then add color a drop at a time until you get the color you want. Then add a few drops of scent (I usually use around 5, depending on the mold) and pour into the mold.

5) If you want to make a soap that uses multiple colors to make a design such as a flower, use a small amount of soap (a block or less usually) and color and scent as desired, and slowly add drops of soap to the mold until you fill the section you’d like. If it goes over the lines a bit, use a knife or your fingernail to scrape the mold clean. Also use a wet paper towel to clean off that area of the mold if needed. This is a tough thing and will take some practice. The result: beautiful soaps! These are actual soaps I made last night for an acquaintance’s birthday. Although soaps can be costly at the start, your fragrances and colors last a long time, and the soap block will last if you use it carefully. Now that I have built up a few colors and scents, I can make soap on the fly for birthdays, housewarmings, and other presents as needed.

6) Lastly, package your soap. I use these clear plastic bags. I buy them in the wedding decoration section of Walmart. I keep extras on hand in case I need to make soap as presents. I also place a label on the bags, I call my soaps “Lacey’s Luxuries” and I say what scent the soap is. I use address labels and print them off my computer (I use that Hallmark program to create the labels). For your wedding favors, you could create address labels even in Microsoft Word that has a message like “Lacey and Tanner, November 2009″ or something similar.
